14th March. St Margaretsbury 2 AFC Dunstable 1
With a run of 19 unbeaten games in the league which stretched back to October 15th last year, AFC finally fell to a defeat against bogey team St Margaretsbury which probably saw them say goodbye to their title aspirations.
In a game that was very scrappy with goal chances at a premium, it was lapses of concentration that cost AFC dear. With Ricky Perks starting his suspension, Louis Porcelli was recalled to the starting line up in goal. The home side took the lead on 7 minutes with Bury's first attack. As the ball went towards the goal, it took a unusual high bounce as Porcelli came for the ball. He had to try and head the ball away but misjudged it and the rebound fell kindly for O'Connor who had the whole goal to aim at.
AFC bounced back straight away as Jermaine Hall put through Chris Francis who escaped his marker to draw his team level within 3 minutes. Porcelli was again called into action to make a smart save to keep the scores level. The half was developing into a midfield battle as neither team could forge an opening.
Half time: St Margaretsbury 1 AFC Dunstable 1
The 2nd period started the same as the 1st finished, with neither team giving an inch. The winner for Bury came midway through the half, when Summers seemed to be going down a blind alley. Somehow he contrived to get a shot away, which wrong footed Porcelli and his strike travelled a good 25 yards all away along the ground and nestled in the bottom corner.
AFC continued to huff and puff but could not break down a resolute home defence and 3 points were lost.
Steve Heath looked on the bright side saying " I must congratulate the players on such a superb run of results in the league. Fair play to Kings Langley for a wonderful 5-0 win over 3rd placed Harefield United today and you must take your hats to them. They should go on now and win the league but we must not give up the fight and we should look at runners up as a minimum" He continued " I have told the players that we went on a 19 game undefeated run, so we need to look to start another one until the end of season"
