3rd October - AFC Dunstable 1 Cockfosters 1
A combination of a poor 1st half, a penalty miss, superb saves and last ditch defending, saw AFC drop their first points at home in the league. One change was made from the 5-2 win at Leverstock Green last Saturday as Fabio Bufano came in for Danny Ryan.
AFC did start on the front foot and nearly took the lead after 6 minutes. A flying run down the right by Taishan Griffith saw his far post cross find Brandon Carney. He cushioned the ball for Leon Cashman whose strike just cleared the bar. Hoping to build on this early pressure, the hosts could just not get going. Credit though must go to Cockfosters, as they worked tremendously hard to close down all the space. They were rewarded on 23 minutes, when indecision by Ricky Perks and Bufano saw Shane Reid nip in to head home. The remaining time in the 1st half saw AFC huff and puff and did not create any chances of note.
Half time: AFC Dunstable 0 Cockfosters 1
After stern words by manager Steve Heath in the break, AFC started to lay siege on the visitors goal. Unfortunately they found Ravan Constable in inspired form. He was brave enough to come and collect many crosses from free kicks and corners. AFC finally drew level 12 minutes into the 2nd half when Brandon Carney fired home. It seemed now there would be only one winner.
Constable's first outstanding save came on 67 minutes when he somehow tipped over a bullet header from Bufano. From the resulting corner, he pushed away a Josh Humbert header off the line. AFC continued to bombard the Fosters goal and when BJ Christie fired a shot at goal, it looked destined to find the net but Constable had other idea's, as he saved at point blank range. Even when the visitors keeper got it wrong, it was turning out to be his day. As he picked up the ball, he rolled it to the edge of the box then picked it up again. Somehow all 3 officials missed it.
With 3 minutes left on the clock, finally it looked like AFC were going to be rewarded for all their pressure. As Christie bore down on goal, it seemed he was impeded. The man in the middle pointed to the spot then sent off Evans Omondi for his 2nd yellow card. Newman Carney who is usually deadly from the spot, crashed his shot against the crossbar.
Cockfosters defenders laid their lives on the line, as blocked everything AFC threw at them and must take credit for that.
Heath cut a frustrated figure at the final whistle and he commented " we threw away the 2 points with our 1st half performance. I know we dominated the 2nd half but it gave us a lot to do after the break" he continued " if we could have applied ourselves a lot better and maybe taken a 1st half lead, that meant Cockfosters would have to come out a bit more, but they decided to try and protect their lead and defended unbelievably. The lad in goal had a great day he should be very pleased with"
